Today, the Volkswagen Jetta is one of the bestselling cars of all time. With a car that has sold as well as it has, there are many interesting facts and information that has arisen over time. So, here are some things you may not have known about the Jetta
It was an answer to The Golf’s lack of popularity
It is absolutely unfathomable that the Golf ever suffered from a lack of popularity. After all, it is one of the most iconic vehicles of all time! However, in 1970s USA hatchbacks were not as popular as they are today. Most people drove sedans, which meant that the Passat sold very well in the US. However, VW came up with the Jetta in order to pull in the customers who wanted to buy a Volkswagen sedan, but the Passat was too big for them.
It replaced the Beetle
In North America, at least. While it is well known that the true replacement to the Beetle is the Golf, this is not always the case in different parts of the world. For example, the Brasilia and then the Gol were the Beetle’s replacements in Brazil. In the US, the Beetle was sold even after the Golf’s introduction. However, since the Jetta and the Beetle would sell in the same market group the decision was made to retire the Beetle and market the Jetta as its replacement.
It was called different things in different markets
The Jetta’s global popularity meant that it was sold in many different countries. However, it was not known as the Jetta everywhere. In the Mexican market, it was rebadged as a Volkswagen Atlantic. In South Africa, the first generation was called the Passat but every generation since has been known as the Fox.
